Job 11

Zophar Rebukes Job

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite ^{▼▼ Lit answered and said}answered, 2 “Shall a multitude of words go unanswered,
And a ^btalkative man be acquitted?
3 “Shall your boasts silence men?
And shall you ^cscoff and none rebuke?
4 “For ^dyou have said, ‘My teaching is pure,
And ^eI am innocent in your eyes.’
5 “But would that God might speak,
And open His lips against you,
6 And show you the secrets of wisdom!
For sound wisdom ^{▼▼ Lit is double
,} ^ghas two sides.
Know then that God ^{▼▼ Lit causes to be forgotten for you}forgets a part of ⁱyour iniquity.

7 ^j“Can you discover the depths of God?
Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?
8 “They are ^khigh as ^{▼▼ Lit the heights of heaven}the heavens, what can you do?
Deeper than ^{▼▼ I.e. the nether world
,} ⁿSheol, what can you know?
9 “Its measure is longer than the earth
And broader than the sea.
10 “If He passes by or shuts up,
Or calls an assembly, ^owho can restrain Him?
11 “For ^pHe knows false men,
And He ^qsees iniquity ^{▼▼ Or even He does not consider}without investigating.
12 ^{▼▼ Lit A hollow man
,} ^t“An idiot will become intelligent
When the ^{▼▼ Lit donkey}foal of a ^vwild donkey is born a man.

13 ^w“If you would ^xdirect your heart right
And ^yspread out your hand to Him,
14 If iniquity is in your hand, ^zput it far away,
And do not let wickedness dwell in your tents;
15 “Then, indeed, you could ^aalift up your face without moral defect,
And you would be steadfast and ^abnot fear.
16 “For you would ^acforget your trouble,
As ^adwaters that have passed by, you would remember it.
17 “Your ^{▼▼ Lit duration of life}life would be ^{▼▼ Lit above noonday
,} ^agbrighter than noonday;
Darkness would be like the morning.
18 “Then you would trust, because there is hope;
And you would look around and rest securely.
19 “You would ^ahlie down and none would disturb you,
And many would ^aientreat your ^{▼▼ Lit face}favor.
20 “But the ^akeyes of the wicked will fail,
And ^{▼▼ Lit escape has perished from them}there will ^ambe no escape for them;
And their ^anhope is ^{▼▼ Lit the expiring of the soul
,} ^apto breathe their last.”
